Music at Worcester is going from strength to strength. Under the inspirational guidance of Director of Music Caius Lee, more music-making is happening than ever before, from developing our Chapel Choir to be among the best in Oxford, to fostering budding musicians through the Instrumental Scholarship Scheme.
What is happening with Music at Worcester?
We have three flagship initiatives.
The Oxford Choral Experience is an outreach scheme to give talented young singers a taste of singing in an Oxford choir. After two days of workshops, academic taster sessions, and an Evensong, participants will be ready to apply to university with a hugely competitive application.
The Instrumental Scholarship Scheme gives any enthusiastic student access to a musical instrument and lessons. Talented musicians won't have to give up when they no longer have a Local Authority-supplied instrument, and those who never had a chance to learn will finally be given the opportunity.
The Worcester Chapel Choir is good - but we want it to be among the best in Oxford. To attract the University's best singers, we are re-introducing an annual tour, as well as a stipend and music lessons for every choral scholar.
Why does music need my support?
Music can only flourish further at Worcester with philanthropic support. If we can raise £25,000 for music this Giving Day, that will allow sixteen students to go on a choir tour, 30 students to enjoy the Oxford Choral Experience, and fund 30 places on the Instrumental Scholarship Scheme.
A message from student musician Lily
The Instrumental Scholarship Scheme was wholeheartedly one of the best things to have come out of my second year at university. It gave me the chance to learn the violin from scratch — something most adults don’t think feasible. Each week, instead of scrolling through my phone, I can devote hours to something productive outside my degree course. When I find myself drowning in academic work, I can shift focus temporarily to the violin and return refreshed.
